The contrast ratio is an important specification for monitors that refers to the difference between the brightest and darkest parts of the display. Specifically, the contrast ratio measures the luminance (brightness) of the whitest white compared to the luminance of the blackest black that the monitor can produce.
A higher contrast ratio means the monitor is capable of displaying a wider range between the brightest and darkest elements on the screen. This allows for more vibrant, detailed images with deeper blacks and more vivid highlights.
Typical contrast ratio values for modern monitors range from around 1,000:1 up to 3,000:1 or more for high-end displays. The higher the contrast ratio, the better the monitor can reproduce a realistic, high-quality image. A monitor with a lower contrast ratio, say 500:1, will generally look washed out in comparison.
